Anyone interested in fishing at Shawmut on Sunday. A group of us will be meeting in the parking lot around 7AM. Bring a lunch and spend the day. So far it looks like Streamer, stonefly and Kim L. Hope to see you there.

I was thinking of heading down there, but I'd have to be back up here in Bangor by 2:30. Are those BWO hatches still going on?

I think our webhost may have the answer to the question about the hatches.
Bill. I'll bring the board for a parking lot demonstration. Saves writing out all the directions.
Muddyboots Hope you can make it.

Bill, if you read the Friday Update on Mike's homepage: http://www.maineflyfishing.com/Friday.htm as of 11/05/04, BWO's were still, in Mike's words, "the order of the day."
Al, I heard from KimL, and he will be there. I think it's just great that he spends his weekends looking after us senior citizens like he does.

Right now guys the river is high. You can wade it but the flow is fast and it is pushing hard. The Carrabassett and Sandy have crested and so the level should fall as the day goes on.
By tomorrow it should be down to an easier wading level. The good part of that is even if it doesn't drop a lot the best surface activity has been in the shallower sections of the river.
I'll do an update on the conditions about 5:00pm when we close today.

Thanks Mike, will look for your follow-up tonight. The NWS site shows the Kennebec at N. Sidney at 7542 cfs right now and is predicting above 5k for tomorrow. Guess a wading staff will be in order. Streamer, maybe Kim will offer geriatric services like a wheel chair shuttle to and from the rivers edge.

Well, looks like I might not be able to hit the hatch, my wife is getting out of work early. But I'll probably drop in and give my new leaders a test drive.

Yep, they were up today and the level is better. One guy just stopped in and got some small Cannon's Bunny Duns to use tomorrow. He said they didn't want anything he was throwing at them today, but that he saw a lot of fish.

Fished the lower river from 1 to dark and had rising fish all day and the whole place to myself. The bwo hatch was fairly heavy. At times I had fish working less than 10' from the boat. They most definitely were taking the bwo's up on top as I was able to watch the fish porpoise up and grab them. Managed 3 fish and had a couple long distance releases using #20 parachute bwo. The fish were hard to spot in the chop but they were there. Tomorrows forecast looks good. Good luck to you all! chris r

You guys are still fishing and there are hatches still going on... and you wonder why I am moving to Maine from Alaska. We have 6 inches of snow on the ground and all the lakes are frozen. My fly gear is all put away for the winter. I can't wait to get out of here.
When fly fishing is outlawed, only outlaws will fly fish. |

Awww, Russ...
I just posted a picture of you in a float tube with a fish in hand. Bad timing on my part. Check out: http://www.maineflyfishing.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1655
Ironically, the thread is about the good weather and good fishing Marshall is having since he moved to Florida. (Six inches of snow ALREADY?)

Fishing at Shawmut today was slow and cold, but productive. The water temp at 0700 was 44 degrees. The few trout hooked were well-educated (with Person-Handling Diplomas). Upon coming in contact with a hook, they employed evasive tactics to avoid capture (diving to the bottom, running toward the fisherperson, wrapping the line around an obstacle, breaking off, etc.). I managed to land one rainbow that tried all of these (except the breaking off part). He took a black CDC Caddis (w/gray wing). What a beautiful fish! His stripe was almost deep purple; he was about 17" long, healthy and very aggressive. It put up a terrific fight; one that could only have been better if I had jumped into the water and wrestled it out by hand (refer back to picture of KimL [Gollum] above)...

After checking http://www.nws.noaa.gov/ I see that Saturday will be a better day for hunting deer (with temps in the 30's and snow cover), and Sunday may be the better day to fish (temps in the 40's and overcast skies)...
The last two times I went, there were BIG fins swirling on the water in the afternoon. Anyone up for this Sunday?

I really think the afternoon is better than the early morning...say anytime after 10-11 am til 4 pm. I would also expect to hear shooting if one arrives at Shawmut in the morning saturday.

A link to this thread appears in the Friday Update, which you can get to by this link... http://www.maineflyfishing.com/Friday.htm
As mentioned in the update, fishing is still (surprisingly) good; fish are still rising; and it won't last long.
Snooze and lose . Just remember to dress warm and stand far from KimL (at least out of bead-head, dancing, and/or shotgun range).

Streamer If you plan on fishing dress warm, fished the lower river from 1:30 til dark tonight had ice in the guides , on the line and my net froze to the boat .There were fish rising here and there till dark . There weren't a lot of olives on the water that I could see. Managed two fish by stripping my fly by them on the swing, one bow and one good brown with two fins intact not clipped. Good luck to you if you go I am about done for the year unless we get a warm afternoon this weekend.

| It looks like we will have the 40+ degree day they have been talking about, so I plan on fishing tomorrow - can't pass that up. What time are you guys planning on showing up? |

Hello Mike, Last time we planned to meet around 7, Kim and I were there a little earlier. (Kim likes to start catching Chubs as soon as he wakes).

I think I'll take Hutch's advice (to fish late morning/early afternoon) and be there by 10. That way, I'll in.

Hi Mike I just got off the phone with Streamer and convinced him to take his Geritol early during one of his many nightly excursions to the bathroom. This extra dose will ensure an early rise so that we can leave his house by 8AM. This will put us up there by 9:15 AM.
