What's the Zero Gravity Challange you might ask - well, it's a chance to get a free hat and $10.00 for trying out a fly rod.
Here are the details cut and pasted from the Orvis Website.
Visit any of the participating Orvis Fly Fishing Shops listed below in April and May, cast a Zero G rod, and get an official Zero G hat and a $10 gift certificate, good instantly or for later *. We're more excited about these new rods than any rod we've ever introduced, and we think you'll agree these are the finest fly rods you've ever cast.
So we have the following rods in stock and you're invited to stop in and try them.
864-2 midflex --- 865-2 midflex --- 865-4 tipflex --- 905-2 midflex --- 908-4 tipflex --- 909-4 tipflex

slick rod, i liked the 8.5' 4piece 5WT 6.5 flex (the 7.5 was a little too quick)
would like to see it on the water....maybe when the dock is in

Mike- Orvis is evil. Nice hat, but I'm sure they'll make their money back off me in the future. These rods are cannons with great accuracy. Tim and I casted diagonally across your casting area and I was affraid of hitting the power lines or a passing car on my back cast, and was limited by the riverfront trees on the forward cast. I'd like to see how they are in a striper weight.
The heavier flex rated rod felt better to me. |

It's got to be a great hat. It's pictured on the cover of the 2006 Maine Open Water Fishing Regulations. Hey, just for trying that sweet rod? I'm down for that. |

Hunter, Evil No – it just seems that way when someone is trying to bring you into the light.
You and Tim stopping in to test those rods and picking two different actions hits on one of the strengths of the Orvis rod line. They have from day one (back in 1856) known that there are different strokes for different folks and they build a variety of rods – full, mid and tip-flex to match different casting styles. Very cool you each picked a different flex.
I hit GLS yesterday with the one Tim liked and had a great time.

Geeze, I didn't know field trials were an option I'd have driven over from camp and fished with you had I known you were coming up. Nice photo.
Your point about over/underlining rods you made elsewhere is a good one. To me the rods felt very similar, just one felt overlined a bit more than the other. So the big question, is Orvis having the equipment trade in deal this year and is it applicable towards the purchase of a new Zero G?

Sorry, no trade-in program at all this year. |

| Are more folks buying the "midflex" or the "tipflex" versions? I assume that the "tipflex" is the faster action rod? |

| Mostly Tip-Flex so far but I'm with TimS on this one I like the Mid-Flex - and yes the tip flex is faster |

Mike: Thanks for letting me take the "Zero G Challange". I was amazed at the versatility of your "Zero G 864-5wt mid flex rod". The lightness in hand was most astonishing to me. Alive & responsive at close in casting , and able to throw line into the backing with a single haul for the one way out there. A very impressive rod, Both weight wise & casting dynamics.
