I knew that would get some clickers:) --- Anyone who knows me, knows that I am not a big advocate of fish-and-tell. I think a big part of the fly fishing experience is finding choosing your fly fishing locations from resources off-line ... you know ... the age old way. Ask a friend, a fly shop owner, take a shot in the dark. As much as I love the web for interacting around fly fishing ... I feel as though common sense discresion concerning fly fishing locations is in order. I just think that much of the fun of fly fishing is in spending the years it takes and making the connections amongst friends and other fly fishermen to learn - the natural way - about where to fish and when and what is better and what holes are good etc..... I am sure many might disagree .. but that is just how I feel. So - with that said - I think we can all agree - that Shawmut is unique in the sense that everyone does know about it - and it is kind of a Maine Public Fly Fishing ground - where there is plenty of room for everyone - and Mike's shop is part of the experience - and with this specific fishery it is fun to share with others how the trout are biting, the hatches that are coming off etc......
So - I went up yesterday - stopped in to Mike and Linda's shop - blew 25 bucks or so on Hendriksons and Blue Winged Olives ... Did see some big hendriksons and smaller BWO's coming off - and a few rises but not the epic hatches I was hoping for.. BUT - if you are willing do go subsurface - hang on to your rod. I really tapped into a few really nice Rainbows and got a picture of this one ... I got a question - this fish had no clipped fins .. very nice to see (as I am not a big fan of clipping fins - why don't we just clip off their tail too ) anyway - that is topic for another day ... point being .. do the rainbows naturally reproduce at shawmut? and is that an indication of a wild fish in maine (no clipped fin)? or do they just clip some and not others ... depending on what kind of mood the hatchery boss is in on any given day ... Oh yeah! forgot to mention -- a first ever... caught a good sized Brook Trout too! First ever for me at Shawmut ... I was shocked when I saw him ... (maybe 15" or so) -- pretty cool --- So - all in all - there are plenty of fish - no browns for me -- a bunch of rainbows ( 4 or 5) and a brook trout ..... They do happen to like 1 fly ALLOT! Mike knows what it is .... stop in and ask him ... I would imagine that the hatches will start to get prolific any day now - maybe tomorrow!
