Hi Mike,
It was my privilege to be at the trout camp, as a member of the teaching staff, this year.( I'm the tall drink of water in the back row of the group photo) I would encourage all the guys and gals to go along to the contest in support this fantastic camp.
The students get a wealth of information that is immediately inculcated with practical experience. Sein netting and studying the entomology of the river with collecting rock basket samples. Water temperature and water quality and how these affect the river ecosystem and aquatic life forms and how these have an affect on the fish and where they feed. The students have opportunity to tie flies with experienced tyers close at hand to assist and answer questions regarding the various types of dressing. They learn how to read the water and about the "CFS" factors for the fish. All this information is reinforced with an evening and morning fishing session with a different guide each day. This provides the students with different fishing styles and how individuals apply them. The staff ask the students to apply what they have learned in the various theory sessions each day. All this at a wonderful camp site with incredible people providing the meals where not a single teenager ( they can eat like Gannets) had cause to complain. The accomodations were wonderful. The owners of this site were generous to a fault. All this provides these "next generation" fly fishers with a foundation that will ensure the future of our sport.
This is a fantastic opportunity provided by the Maine TU and the tireless efforts of the Camp Director and all the people that are in volved. From the Biologists, pathologist, the guides and other speakers make this such a worth while experience that I would gladly have given my left one for being given this chance as a kid.
My personal thanks to all those that gave so generously of their time and generosity of the sponsors.
Bok
P.S: I purposely left out the names of the places and people for fear of embarassing them. They know who they are. |
If you are goin to the water you might as well fish. |

Trucka, The first one is about 2.5' across (round) and the rest are about 16" - subject to change but those are the sizes we used last year. |

Yes, but to make it fair for those who aren't using one you have to cast standing on your head.

Well, it was a good time and we raised $545.00 $560.00 $686.00 $751.00 (just got another check - some more promised - I'll update as I get more - it's not too late to send yours ) for Maine TU Trout Camp. Casting was a little tougher as we had to set up in the parking lot instead of on the river. The river took our dock, deck and deck support last fall in the final flood level waters of October and I’ve yet to replace them.
So we didn’t have the shelter of being tucked down at water level and out of the wind. However, 28 people stepped up to cast and some paid entry fees (like flyrodandreel from Virginia) and never gave casting a thought – together they assure Maine TU Trout Camp will next year host another 12 kids to a week of hard but fun probing into the wonderful world of cold water fisheries.
There were two winners – Kemp Carey won the casting event and will be in today to select his rod. Rumor has it he is looking hard at a Zero Gravity 9-weight. Al Lindberg (although he doesn’t know it yet) won the door prize of a Generation 3 Trout Taper Wonderline. But the real winners are the kids who will get to attend next years Trout Camp and that’s what this contest is all about.
Thank you to all who participated and those who donated their time for set up and tear down.
The Goat (soon to be renamed Belly Boy) tries his luck.

Bill Reed of the Orvis Company helps a future winner.

Bill helps the future winner's brother - another future winner.

Austin tries his luck - hopefully he did better later at Pierce.

Jimmy was our judge - Thanks Jim

The Gallery

Kim finds out it's harder than it looks.

And Kevin (father of the two future winners) gives it a go.

| And thank you Mike and Linda for all the time and treasure you have both invested in this event for the last 4 years to benefit TU Trout Camp. Yet another example of the generosity and selflessness that has earned you our deep respect and and your shop our patronage. |
It may be my purpose in life to simply serve as a warning to others. |

Well Flyrodandreel your $60.00 match just put us over $1,000.00
Muddyboots called in a donation of $30.00 and Jeff Reardon just stopped here at the shop and donated $30.00 - we were at $881.00 and those two and your match did it.
There are a few more checks coming and I'll update as they come in.
Thank you one and all. |
