Hi all,

The casting contest ought to be able to raise at least $1000, which if I remember correctly is about what it costs to send one kid to one week of Trout Camp. $560 (1:00 PM on Tuesday 7/17/2007) is a little over halfway there, but there needs to be 30 more entry fees paid to reach that amount. I will buy two more entries (Mike, I will drop the money off on my way through Friday) and I am challenging others to complete the remaining 28.

Don't wait for someone else to do it. Call Mike now (207-453-6242) and give him your credit card number (or better yet, call me and give me your credit card number ) and the number of entry fees you would like to purchase, or send him an email and pledge the funds (just don't forget to mail the check).

Each topic on this board receives hundreds of hits. Pick up the phone or click the "send us an email" button and let's raise $1000.

I'm in Neal, since I ended up striper fishing when I should have been competing. (Wouldn't have been fair anyway)

Mike, I'll stop by with an entry fee also as soon as I have to visit one of my assigned kids in that area.

Come on fellow members and flyfishing lovers, let's make a donation (it's painless, trust me) for a worthy cause. I challenge all out there reading this not only to reach Neal's goal of $1000, but perhaps reach a bit higher. Who knows, one of these kids may be the ones fighting to save our river when they grow up. PLEASE accept this challenge and give now.

$90.00 more today – bringing the total to $751.00.

This has to be a unique situation. Here’s a casting contest that has come and gone and people are still donating money to the program the contest supports – you people are the best

I'd have put fly fishers are the best but one of my favorite bait slingers came in today and donated $30.00 because he thinks programs that get kids outdoors are a good thing.

Hey boys and girls, we are within $250 of reaching the goal of raising $1000 and sending one kid to Trout Camp for a week. That's 17 more entry fees at $15 each. Surely there are 17 forum readers out there that can help out.

If you feel bad that you didn't make it to the casting contest, call (207-453-6242), email (ffo@maineflyfishing.com), or send your $15 entry fee to Mike and go out on your lawn (or favorite body of water) and practice for next year. If you are relieved that you didn't make it to the casting contest or your physical location prevented you from attending, send your $15 entry fee as there are many in the same boat. If you made it to the casting contest, but probably shouldn't have, send another $15 entry fee and perhaps you will feel better about yourself, if not your casting.

I don't want to get maudlin, but we have all been the recipient of someone's generosity at one time or another. The kid that attends Trout Camp because of this money will probably have no idea where it came from, but that won't diminish their experience. We have no idea down the road what this kid might do. They might help save a river, contribute to a conservation effort, teach others what they have learned, or donate money so that another kid can attend Trout Camp. We will probably never know, but that doesn't lessen the impact they will have.

Some may be asking, who the hell is this guy asking for $15 of my money? Well the following is my disclaimer: I have no relationship to Mike and Linda or their shop except as a customer and grateful recipient of their knowledge and help. I have no relationship to Trout Unlimited (not even a member...shame on me) or Trout Camp. I am thrilled to be able to fish in rivers that you wouldn't get near, let alone wet wade in thirty years ago when I moved to Maine, but I realize that there is still much work to be done. I did not participate in the casting contest, not the least of reasons being that I couldn't stand to be beat by Kevin McKay's two boys. I fly-fish, if that's what you want to call it, but my eighteen year old son does not (different strokes.....but I wish he did). I try to support worthy causes as best I can, particularly when they benefit the future of something I care about.

The lines are open and operators are standing by waiting to take your calls (well, you can send Mike an email after hours). Whether they know it today or not, some kid will be grateful for your generosity.

All right Neal, no need to get personal. Despite my poor performance I am glad to have had the chance to help a good cause, besides a little public humiliation is good for the soul, right? My check for $15 will be in the mail today, payable to TU I assume?

Mr. Trude,
You can make it out to Trout Unlimited or to us here at the shop (Fly Fishing Only) either way we will get it into the Maine TU Trout Camp fund.
Thank you,
Mike

Mike,
You say a "bait slinger" has donated $30? I can't let that stand, put me down for another $15. I won't be matched by a wormer. Let me know if you need my card number again. How are we doing? Got that kid to camp yet? Come on, people, cough up some of that beer money you're stashing away for the next trip.

Nice raise.

Everyone.....

I was into FFO on Friday to give Mike my $30 and he and Linda indicated that they would like to wrap up the casting contest fund raiser for TU Trout Camp by the end of this week, before they go on vacation. I am not sure that they intended it to run this long in the first place, but the additional contributions have been great.

Mike will undoubtedly update the amount raised on Tuesday when he is back in the shop, and then as flyrodandreel said, let's shake a little of that beer money loose and hit $1000. Remember, it is one kid for one week, but the result could last a lifetime.

Thanks all (baitslingers included ).

I'm basically in the same boat as titleguy (although I understand that titleguy spends more time OUT of the boat than in it). It would have amounted to thievery for me to enter the contest, so I'll just send in the fee.

We're at $881.00 to date. However we are going on vacation at the end of the week so if you're thinking about sending a donation please do it soon as we won't be here to collect it.

Of course if you do send a donation late we'll accept it when we get back , but it is time to wrap this up.

So, even if we don't hit the $1,000.00 goal Neal set for use we have bumped it by over $300.00 with this second effort

$119 to go........that is only 8 more entry fees for the casting contest.

Surely there are eight forum members out there that can call Mike and push us to the $1000 goal.

If you are one of those people who like to wait until the last minute to commit, the last minute has arrived. Please chime in and ante up your $15 and let's all make some kid .

Thanks.

Come on let's blow the dust off those wallets and purses. Time to let the moths out. We only need 119 to get a kid to camp. I'll match the next $60. and we've done it. I just won't be drinking as much when I'm on vacation next month. Let's get it done!

We did it -

Total right now is $1001.00

and there are some more checks coming.

Thanks everyone.

I'll update the amount when we get the additional checks but as it sits now with the second effort Neal started we made it to $1,000.00

To all who stepped up and contributed to the casting contest, both casters and non-casters alike, THANK YOU!

To Mike and Linda for sponsoring the casting contest, THANK YOU TOO!

No one can argue that raising $1000 in order to send a kid to Trout Camp is a great cause. Watching the FFO community (including the baitslingers among us) come together and raise this amount has been fun.

If your check was just about to go in the mail, or you were just about to pick up the phone and charge an entry fee to your credit card, go ahead and do it. The beginning line in this thread said that the contest ought to be able to raise at least $1000. I don't think Mike will turn away your contribution because the threshhold has been met. You have until the end of the week.

Nice job all.

Flyrodandreel,
Make that TWO happy campers.

I'm not sure where along the way but somewhere it was assumed that the $1,000.00 would send one kid. Actually it's about $500.00 for each kid.

Great job - one and all.

Mike, I'm sure glad you clarified that. At the risk of being politically incorrect (can you imagine me taking such a risk?), I was tempted to post why on Earth it cost $1,000 to send a kid to camp for a week, when so much of the experience depends on volunteers. $500 makes much more sense.

Mike and Rory

Mea culpa on the $1000 figure. I thought that I had read in a post some time ago (but I don't plan on searching the archives to prove it one way or another) that the full cost of sending a kid to Trout Camp for a week was $1000. I never second guessed the amount as I think that you would pay at least that per week to attend a commerical camp with the same theme.

All the better that the $1000 raised will let TWO kids attend. Those who donated can feel good in that they got two for the "price" of one .
