Here's a link to the page with the Casting Contest information.
Give it a peek. http://www.maineflyfishing.com/casting.htm
Remember if you can hit a 36" target at 30-feet you could win this contest. And as we have done for the last several years there will be a drawing for "non-casting" participants. So if you want to help support the Maine TU Trout Camp but can't be here to cast you can still enter and win.
That's right there will be two winners. The casting winner will have their choice of a Helios fly rod and the non-casting winner will have their choice of a Hydros fly rod.
Follow the link and get the details on how to help support Maine TU Trout Camp. |

Conspiracy..I say...conspiracy.
How come you always have that contest (except for, I think, one year) when I'm out West?
I'll be throwing an entry fee your way...even though I'll (and a bunch of other FFO regulars) be on a flight at 40,000 ft as you guys are doing it.

Wow, that was quick. I put this post up last night around 7:00pm and when I got here this morning 2 people had purchased non-casting entries. Thank you both for getting this started. |

Put me down for 6 non-casting entries. The check is in the mail (or will be tomorrow). I could use a Hydros rod.
Once again I urge all of the non-casters to unite and buy your entries today. We need to show those that show up and cast that there are more of us who depend on luck and good fortune to succeed in life than there are those who think they can get by with just skill and performance.
This is a great cause that deserves the support of all. Through Mike and Linda's generosity, this contest has raised somewhere around $1000 a year for Maine TU Trout Camp, about the tuition cost of one camper. Hopefully that goal can be reached again this year.
Who do you want checks made payable to Mike, Maine TU or FFO? |

Neal, Thank you for the entries and for passing the word along. As for who to make checks out to KVCTU or Kennebec Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited works well. However, if someone wants to make a credit card purchase of an entry we have to run it through the shop credit card account and transfer it. Bit of a hassle but we can get it done.
Our chapter provides the man-hours, tent and volunteers needed to hold the event collects the donations and then passes it onto the Maine State Council as a donation to the Maine TU Trout Camp from our Chapter.

A few of us might to do some carbo-loading at Big G before the big cast off
I hope no little reds are lurking around the casting area |

Let me see what early August brings. I DO have a Hydros rod and Battenkill large arbor reel that will need to be picked up. AND breakfast at Big G's is something that is awfully enticing. BUT I will probably still rely upon my luck, good fortune and good looks to win a(nother) Hydros rather than my casting skills in hopes of owning a Helios....but who knows. |

Hey Joel, it's a deal. Linda and I talked it over and we've decided to open it up to any rod instead of requiring people to use the rods we provide.
So if anyone has thought they would like to enter but didn’t because they wanted to use their own rod and couldn’t – well – that has changed. Bring your own rod and see if you can win another rod – the Helios of your choice.
Leaders of at least 7 1/2’ will be required and no rod heavier than a six-weight will be allowed. Oh no flies either – the judge will provide all participants with a small strike indicator to use for the terminal end of the leader.
Oh - and since you're doing a double entry we'll even let you cast twice to see if you can better your first score. |

Mike:
That's my sister's birthday, so I'll be down at my mom's (and taking my brother in law on early am striper trips) that weekend. Between now and then I'll come up and get some entries for the non-casters drawing, though.
However, if I were entering, I'd want to know what know just what you are providing for a "fly"--how heavy, how wind-resistant, etc--so I could think about what kind of leader I wanted and so I could practice with the set up I'll have to use.
Would you provide (i.e. "sell") samples for the more competitive among us. |

I guess you had better watch what you ask for Joel. That will be $30 please.

Geez Jeff.....Next thing you know, you will want Mike to forecast the wind speed/direction and relative humidity for August 7th. There has to be a certain element of surprise to this. |

Jeff, They will either be these

in the smallest size.
Or the new Unibobber in the extra small size that came out recently and is shown in this picture.

Both of these indicators are small and cast fairly well. Good or bad the good or bad about them will be the same for everyone.
The reason for these is in past years the judges have had a hard time seeing anything smaller.
So I've got to do some testing with both to see how they flip over compared to each other. I'll try to do that soon and post which it will be.

I vote for one of these. May be a little tough on the 3 wt guys...but fun to watch.

Edited to add: If you go with the 36" diameter ball, the judges should have no problem seeing where it lands. |

I'd be thinking about something like 7.5 feet of 40 pound hard mono to cast that--especially in the wind.
Those ought to cast about like a panfish popper, I'd think.
I'll be down in Casco Bay chasing stripers instead. |

Well after a little testing I found that these work better than the Unibobber.

And that's what we've used on the rods we had set up the last few years so I guess we'll stick with the small size of the yarn indicators.
The Unibobber is actually too light and so they are hard to control - it seemed like casting a leader with nothing on it, while the yard strike indicator allowed control and straightened out the leader nicely.
Oh, I was using a 7 1/2 foot leader - 4X.
So if anyone wants to practice get some of the small yarn indicators but don't bother bringing your indicator to the casting contest. We'll provide those. |

Neal, Always willing to give a few extra bucks to a worthy cause. Haven’t heard anything about the TU Trout Camp cane rod raffle. I’ll ask Greg Ponte to post something soon.

I've had a number of people say they have heard good things about the Maine TU Trout Camp. However, those same people have often said I don't know exactly what they do there - but I hear it's all good stuff.
Well, for those who are curious here's a link to the schedule for the 2010 session that just ended. If you visit the link you'll see they roust the kids out at 4:30am each day and then fill the day with scheduled events.
The top page shown in the link is the schedule and the following page has an explanation of each event.

The 2010 ME TU Trout Camp raffle for the Payne 101 bamboo fly rod built by Joel Anderson was won by a 14 year old MTUTC student who bought his ticket during the camp week.
A 9 year old boy who was with his family to pick up his older brother after camp selected the winning ticket!
The young man who won was in awe and speechless after his name was called in front of the large crowd as the winner of the Payne 101 bamboo fly rod. Don Taylor and I after the luncheon explained the do and don'ts on putting the bamboo fly rod together and taking it apart. He also practiced casting the bamboo fly rod before he left Evergreens Campground with his Mom for home.
On the last day prior to the drawing all of the students fill out a camp survey of every aspect of the camp week. The staff will then review the student surveys and discuss making any necessary changes for the following year.
This young man stated in writing on his survey before he won the fly rod “The whole experience at trout camp was inspiring and even life changing. It changed the way I look at fishing"
Not much else to say from me............ |

Just a reminder that Mike and Linda usually come back from vacation with nothing to do, so let's flood their mailbox with non-casting entries to the TU Trout Camp casting contest while they are gone. At least they can come home and open mail.
