Where will you be fishing on the Kennebec and what kind of boat will you be using?
Water temps are pretty warm and hard on trout right now. If you are targeting trout, it might be better sport to wait until water temps come down into the 60s in late August and September. If you are targeting smallmouth bass you will find fish you can reach in a boat below Skowhegan at the Eddy Launch on Rte 2 all the way down the impoundment of Shawmut Dam, below Shawmut down through Fairfield, and from Waterville to Augusts. Unless we get some rain and flows and depths come up a bit, you are going to bang a motor on a lot of rocks fishing between Waterville and Augusta at present. |

As Gordito said the temps in the Kenny are up and will be for awhile.I spend allot of time on the river chasing brook trout, salmon but this time of year spend most of my time on the coast just because of that reason.But..the warm water fishing ,Small mouth I'm told is doing great right now ,guys from work float either from Winslow down to Sidney or Sidney to Augusta almost every weekend in yaks or canoes and hammer the bass also earlier in the season caught some nice stripers. Both with hardware and flies. I have done this float myself many times and its beautiful lots of wildlife and fish to catch Good luck |

What he said... but leave Waterville in the morning because the wind in the afternoon on a warm day comes right up the river and will blow you upstream after putting your fly in your scalp. Evenings after the sun goes behind the trees around 5 pm the wind calms and it is beautiful -- you'll see a half dozen eagles and osprey and maybe some deer but no houses -- however it is a 3 hour float and hard to find the Sidney takeout in the dark unless there are some teenagers parked there making out with their boom box playing in the moonlight.
There are 3 Class I rapids between Waterville and Sidney. Take the first 2 river right, especially in low water, and the third, marked by an orange ball on a cable across the river is 6 Mile Falls. Take it river left where you will find a canal built sometime before 1837, the year the former Edwards Dam in Augusta inundated this area. The canal is maybe 75 feet long and bypasses the ledge that runs at a 45 degree angle across the river making Six Mile Falls. With enough flow there is a chute on river right that a kayaker might like but scout it first. It's about a mile more from here to the Sidney boat launch takeout.
Waterville to Augusta is also possible. Takes 6 or 7 hours if you don't explore too much.
I don't know of anybody who provides a shuttle between Waterville and Sidney or down to Augusta so you'll want two cars and a buddy.
Sent you an Email Beastro about a nice trout float trip further up river for September temps. |

As far as the Kennebec goes, how about the East Outlet in about 10 days?? I will be camping in the area then and I am hoping that the cooler temperatures AFTER TODAY will help. Some rain would help too I am sure...

the fly looks like this but a 2in tail. The tail was the hide from maybe a racoon but the leather was still on it gave it great action in the water. what is this fly called?

| That is a muddler minnow, great fly. The one you have there is tied in the classic style, but they can also be tied with marabou or rabbit strips or many other things. The variations and colors are endless. I like them with a cone head personally, gives them great action in the water. Sounds like the one you had was tied with either a rabbit strip or a pine squirrel strip. |

I actually have a slumpbuster variation that I've been using that is a bit bigger than your typical one (using rabbit strips and a braid that was way too big... yes I bought the wrong stuff at first ).
Ive mainly used it in an area I've been catching a lot of bass.. but wow have I caught a lot of fish on it.
I actually lost one of them just a couple days ago when something very large decided to take it and break me off. Never got to see the fish either. |
